Beaumont-Hamel, Battle of the Somme

“It is not easy to connect with the experiences of Canadian soldiers in the First World War. Now, one hundred years in our past, it has slipped beyond living memory. But we think we have found a way to bring you back, to connect with the epic story of the Somme. And we want you to come and see it.
This is your invitation to visit Legion Magazine’s new bilingual web experience Blood in the Mud. Our new interactive site examines the role of the Newfoundland Regiment and the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the monumental battle that took place on both sides of the Somme River in France, from July 1 to Nov. 18, 1916. The assault at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1 saw the Newfoundlanders all but wiped out in only 30 minutes. The Battle of the Somme continued for more than four months and more than 1.3 million soldiers on both sides were killed or wounded. Through a virtual battlefield tour, timelines, maps, photos, and video of the battlefield today, Legion Magazine recalls the sacrifices of the soldiers, placing the events of Beaumont-Hamel into the context of the Battle of the Somme and the greater war.

This is our story, and we hope you appreciate it and learn a little more of our shared history. Please pass it along.
