The Netherlands Liberated in 1944/1945

Next Crown Year 2019/2020

16 April 2015: Commemoration cemetery Heidehof, Ugchelen

Every year school children of the Christelijke Basis School “de Bouwhof” take care of the graves of 55 crew members of allied forces, who lost their lives in the liberation of Europe at the cemetery of Ugchelen. From 1985 every five years, in the context of the 5-year celebration of the liberation, an impressive commemoration is held at the “Heidehof”. The crewmembers originated from six different countries: Australia, USA, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand and the Czech Republic.

The Royal Dutch Air Force provided a large part of effort in the commemoration. The orchestra of the RDAF played at the cemetery, while in the meantime a clarinet trio played for the honoured guests in the auditorium. Furthermore the Air Operations and Control Station Nieuw Milligen realised the necessary work for this commemoration.
Children of the “Bouwhof” laid down flowers at every grave. In a short ceremony they handed over the responsibility of taking care of the graves the next few years to the new group.
